Design and development of an epidemic control and avoidance system

Resume*

The dawn of 2020 reserved a shocking surprise for communities around the world. The new virus, termed SARS-CoV-2, spread from one human to another at an unprecedented rate, causing an infectious disease (COVID-19), which had severe impacts on the population.
This project plans to develop a unified framework for monitoring and controlling the epidemic's spread. The proposed framework aims to monitor the motion of peoples and their interactions. The system should track the activities of the persons tested positive and detect the proximity within other people. The proposed framework should also consider the time when the proximity activities happen, in order to derive the likelihood that a given person will be affected. The system is expected to track the person’s community (such as family and team) to ensure that only the ones belonging to the same community can be close enough. An automatic alert could be generated if a person's proximity does not belong to the same community has been detected, or if an affected person moves outside a constrained area. The entire system should be managed through mobile and web applications.

Objectifs*

I – To study the different techniques for localization and proximity detection.
II- To develop an application prototype that includes both the proximity detection and alerting systems 
III- Investigate the use of advanced machine learning tools for result enhancement

Resultats attendus*

I – A unified framework that is able to efficiently localize and control the epidemic expansion   
II - The system is composed of a mobile app running on smart phones and a web application that allows community management

Antecedents

The main design challenge is to efficiently detect people's proximity using various sensing and wireless communication technologies. It is expected to leverage different triangulation techniques using RSSI of multiple signals to detect people's proximity. 
The emergent machine learning techniques (i.e., Deep Learning and Federated Learning) would also be considered for enhancing the accuracy of the suggested Algorithms. 
Finally, the graph association will be explored to manage the relationship between different community members.

Etape 1: Study and compare state of the art techniques for proximity detection  3 months
Etape 2: Design and implement the mobile application using a combination of the selected techniques 3 months
Etape 3: Design and implement the community management web application           2 months
Etape 4: Evaluate the performance of the framework  2 months
Thesis writing will be done in parallel of the aforementioned steps
